Juneau

JUNEAU, 20th June. Juneau is the capital of Alaska. It’s set at sea level on the Gastineau Channel and is the traditional home of the Tlingit Indians. It also has the Juneau ice fields and the Menderhall Glacier. We bused out to the very impressive glacier.

We then went back into town and up the Gondola. At the edge of town the mountains rise from sea level to 1500m over a distance of about 500m. The gondola went straight up through the temporal rain forest. We went for a walk which was awesome.  We half expected a Mammoth to come walking along the track at any minute.

At the top of the gondola ride we went to a cultural show, run by a mildly creepy family that play a sort of hillbilly/Russian/early American music. Very entertaining. They talked, showed photos, played their instruments and sang. There were 4 cruise ships in port that day, so around 15,000 extra people flooded into the town. That night on the ship was an adults only scavenger hunt competition. All items had to be competed from within the room and included such things as a girl with 4 pairs of men’s jeans, a guy with three different coloured bras on his head, a guy and a girl sharing a pair of jeans and guy and girl to swap shirts. Much clothing changing and heaps of laughing went on. Our team did very well. We didn’t win but we had heaps of fun. One request was to run out and show a tattoo. The next call was for a girl with a butterfly tattoo on her left cheek. The game host then admitted that he just wanted another look at that particular tattoo or maybe that particular location of the tattoo.
