Narita

We had 25 hours to explore the city of Narita, and explore we did! We caught the bus from the hotel into the city and taking our cue from our fellow travellers and hopping off when everyone else did. Our lack of understanding of what we were doing must not have been very discreet as an Australian guy, Sean, stopped to help us. Turned out he was from Canberra, which was a little freaky. He led us to a nice little restaurant and showed us the good Karaoke Bar so we asked him to join us for dinner.  It was the kind of restaurant where you took off your shoes and left them in a locker. The benches were at ground level with the tables dug into the ground and you lowered yourself down to sit. We ordered from a picture menu and had lots of awesome tiny Japanese portions. They were scrumptious and overall it was a fantastic place and we became instant fans of Japanese cuisine. Then there was Sake. The waitress brought out large shot glasses on a dish. She started to pour…..over the normal fill level, over the rim and into the dish until it too was full. We drank all the Sake, and felt it. In terms of alcohol, Sake works! After a few Sakes we made our way to the Karaoke bar. Lucky no one knew us. Let’s just say that we really did rock Lady GaGa.

16th June was spent looking around Narita. We went to the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple. It is one of the main centres of the Buddhist Shingon sect in Japan and was amazing. The landscaping was fantastic, with groomed gravel and shaped trees.

There was a most beautiful and very old cemetery off the main street along with fantastic market type shops.

We sampled many daring things like whole baby fish and grasshoppers. Quite like straw cooked in sweet sauce. Lunch was eaten in a place with no English and no picture menus. The waitress had no idea what we were saying and we had no idea what she was saying. Most restaurants display amazing plastic models of the food but n
ot this one. So the ordering process was interesting to say the least. Still don’t know what we ate.

We didn’t waste much time in Narita. We used every minute of it. It was then off to the airport and for our time travel experience. We left Narita at 7pm on the 16th June……..
