2nd Dec – Darwin, Australia.
Darwin was fun. A group of us went off together and caught the hop on hop off bus.
We visited the Museum.
Modern Art?
More Modern Art?
And then Crocadillius. This is the place where people pay lots of money to go into a tube and feed the crocs. It isn’t nearly as scary as I though it would be. But outside the tank we were almost as close as the people who paid hundreds of dollars. Main difference was that they got wet.
Then a pub lunch.
Sailaway from Darwin heads off in the wrong direction due to shipping channels.
3rd Dec – Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia
The captain slowed the ship down over night so that we reached the Torres Strait at day break. Yay – up at 5am.
We had a great pilot on board who gave a few lectures and commentated the whole way through the exciting parts. Fantastic.
The Torres Strait lies between Australia and the Melanesian islands of New Guinea. It is approximately 150 km wide at its narrowest point. To the south is Cape York Peninsula, the northernmost continental point of Australia.
It was fantastic. It’s a fairly treacherous waterway with many shipwrecks. Huge rocks smack in the middle of the shipping lane.
And it was incredibly windy. The Strait is very narrow with two major oceans squeezing through.
Panorama shots are not so good in huge winds. Hahaha
Apparently there is a height difference of the water at each end.
He then gave some great lectures.
4th Dec – At Sea.
Lunch with the Captain.
A roulette ball stuck on the wheel. A crocodile cloud chasing Peter Pan, and stunning sunsets and seas. And a cooking class at Izumi.
Great fun.
