Malaga, Spain
Back on the mainland today. Málaga is a port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, and is pretty stunning. Now holiday place with high-rise hotels and sandy beaches. Behind the modern city are two citadels, the Alcazaba and ruined Gibralfaro, from the Moorish rule. There is also a Renaissance cathedral, nicknamed La Manquita (“one-armed lady”) because one of its towers wasn’t built.
It’s one of the oldest cities in the world – 2,800 years. It was founded by the Phoenicians in 770BC. The Romans ruled from 218BC. The next 800 years it was under Islamic rule. All this makes it a haven for archaeologists.
Very pretty.
Then a wander around the ship before sail away.
I went to a “Silent Party”. Everyone wears headphones – and dances. But they are listening to different songs – so dancing differently! Very funny.
We passed the Rock of Gibraltar tonight at 9.30pm and are now on the way.
So now it’s farewell to Spain – and the land of “Run-i-ya Book-ar”. I guess I’ll just be plan old Raina Burke now. I’m now off on a nine day trip across the Atlantic.
